The Pomona Unified Partners in Learning Foundation awarded 28 scholarships at their 3rd Annual Scholarship Luncheon on May 12th, 2016. Scholarship applications went out throughout the Pomona Unified School District for graduating seniors who are attending college with at least a 3.0 GPA. Among the recipients of the scholarships were Susan Lucas from Pomona High School who will be attending UC Berkeley, Shaun Coulon from Fremont Academy of Engineering & Design who will attend UCLA and Megan Adrias from Diamond Ranch High School who will attend UC Davis.
The Scholarship Luncheon is PUPIL Foundation’s biggest event of the year and had more than 330 attendees including representatives from local businesses in Pomona and surrounding cities. “This year we were able to give out more scholarships and secure more funding than ever before thanks to the wonderful partnerships we have made this year, including the generous contribution from Cardenas Markets of $25,000,” said Jeanelle Jimenez, PUPIL Foundation CEO. The keynote address was given by Neha Sampat, the CEO of built.io, a Silicon Valley technology company. Sampat is a Pomona native and alumn of Garey High School’s class of 1995. Her keynote address instilled advice to graduating seniors in the form of a top 10 list of pieces of advice. Sampat’s speech was well-received by the students by the constant nods and laughs from the audience. “Next year, we hope to make the event even better and more successful,” said Jimenez. The PUPIL Foundation meets every last Wednesday of the month at the PUSD District Education Center in the Strategic Planning Room at 8:30am.
